In general, people still seem to be a little apprehensive when I’m consulting in the clinic and suggest a course of chemical peels to improve the skin concern they have. I feel this is because historically the belief and understanding at the time was that chemical peels had to be strong and reach the deeper layers of the skin. This would result in substantial downtime and excessive peeling. Much more recently, the understanding of the skin has advanced and it is now accepted that regular, gentle chemical peels are more beneficial. I am a huge lover of chemical peels, and in particular, the chemical peels from AlumierMD, and have seen my skin improve hugely as a result of regular peels. So if you have a skin concern, be it ageing, pigmentation, rosacea or breakouts, or if you just want to take your skin to the next level with smoother, brighter and more radiant skin, regular chemical peels will undoubtedly help you to achieve this.
Chemical peels are important for skin rejuvenation. They help to improve the radiance of the skin and as I mentioned above, play a crucial role in a treatment plan to improve skin conditions such as acne, signs of ageing, pigmentation and rosacea. Results can be seen with a single peel, in terms of radiance and skin brightening. I often perform a chemical peel on myself before a night out to achieve that glowing skin we all aim for. However, when we are treating a skin concern, a course of chemical peels will be needed, along with the appropriate skincare.
At Ultimate Bodyworks I carry out a full and detailed consultation to look at the holistic view of all the factors that may be affecting your skin. We then decide upon a hyper-customised treatment protocol to work on your specific skin concerns. Each treatment includes a pre-peel mask, the actual chemical peel and a post-peel mask. For AlumierMD radiant peels, I also include 20 mins of Dermalux LED Phototherapy to really supercharge those skin cells and get them functioning to their optimum levels again. For the actual peel, a bespoke combination of acids is applied to your skin. This changes the pH of the skin which loosens the connections between dead skin cells. This results in your skin looking fresher and brighter as the dead skin has been gently removed. Peels can also help to normalise lipid production which will help if you are prone to breakouts and/or acne. Chemical peels also help to regulate the rate at which dead skin cells are turned over. This helps to improve skin concerns such as ageing where the skin cell turnover rate slows down and skin can look dull with fine lines and wrinkles appearing deeper as a result.
Chemical peels exfoliate and regenerate the skin. The result of this is improved skin texture and tone. This exfoliating effect also stimulates our body to produce more collagen.
Peels can be superficial, medium or deep. The deeper the peel, the longer the downtime and potential for complications. Superficial to medium peels, like the ones used at Ultimate Bodyworks are safe and well-tolerated, with only mild sensation and erythema (redness of the skin). AlumierMD peels are meant for repeated, progressive treatments, this means building your results slowly to prevent the side effects of a more aggressive approach. The right home skincare is essential. These help prepare your skin for a peel and then help settle the skin after and maximise the results. They can also help to support the development and maintenance of beautiful skin. All clients are given complimentary post-procedure kits after a peel.
